Dr. Bernhard Hennig is Professor of nutrition and toxicology at the University of Kentucky. Following undergraduate and graduate studies in biochemistry and nutrition, Dr. Hennig received his PhD in nutrition from Iowa State University in 1982. After completing a postdoctoral scholarship in the area of cardiovascular biochemistry at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dr. Hennig joint the University of Kentucky. He has been the Director of the NIEHS/NIH-funded University of Kentucky Superfund Research Center from 2003 until 2020. Dr. Hennig is an accomplished scientist who has extensive experience in basic and applied aspects of nutritional sciences and toxicology. These two areas of interest intersect in his primary research focus on endothelial cell physiology, particularly as it relates to mechanisms of the development of atherosclerosis and other inflammatory diseases. Currently, Dr. Hennig’s research explores the paradigm that healthful nutrition can modulate environmental insults and thus decrease vulnerability to environmental stressors. This research also includes metabolic cross-talk among cell systems and tissues, including the microbiota, liver and vascular tissues, with a focus on cardiometabolic diseases. His research activities have resulted in more than 240 peer-reviewed articles over the last 30 years. Dr. Hennig’s research has been funded primarily by NIH/NIEHS and USDA. Dr. Hennig has received numerous national awards, is a Fulbright Scholar recipient, and has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry for over 15 years.
